Uchino: superior Japanese quality you can feel on your skin

Article - September 6, 2019

Uchino works tirelessly to develop luxury towels and bathroom linens that are more delicate to the touch and provide maximum comfort – always in line with the Japanese Monozukuri philosophy devoted to creating unmatchable quality.

THE CONCEPT BEHIND THE NAME OF THE ‘UCHINO TOUCH’ SHOP (ROPPONGI HILLS, TOKYO) IS TO INCITE PEOPLE TO SELECT PRODUCTS BY THE TOUCH; NOT BY THE COLOUR OR THE BRAND.

Uchino are masters in comfort. Since 1947, the firm has specialized in crafting high-quality towels, bathrobes, resort/ loungewear and baby products.

When it comes to every stage of the production process— from procurement of the best cotton raw materials to the adoption of pioneering technology to weave the final product—the company spares no effort in delivering the finest Japanese quality to its customers. And this meticulous attention to detail and craftsmanship is literally palpable as soon as an Uchino towel touches your skin.

Speaking with the company’s president, Nobuyuki Uchino, his enthusiasm and passion for the Japanese philosophy of Monozukuri (the art of making things) is also palpable. Japan has built its brand around the quality standards and craftsmanship that go into making its products, from cars and electronics, to food, health and beauty goods. And Uchino’s towels, bath linens, and wear are made from the company’s unique technology to ensure maximum comfort.

“When compared to other manufacturers, our ‘Monozukuri’ has a unique starting point. For example, most towel-making companies around the planet primarily focus on production efficiency. Ultimately, it results in a swiftly-produced, heavier, and thicker towel, which have long been the preferred choice of U.S. and European consumers,” explains Mr. Uchino.

“At Uchino, our first priority is to provide comfortable material to our customers. As a result, our production method is, without a doubt, a strenuous and lengthy process; but the results of our production are undeniably unmatched. My belief is that if you ask a manufacturer to produce what he wants to produce, it will not sell. Instead, we should ask him what he doesn’t want to make.”

Mr. Uchino also points out the nature of the Japanese people and how it is reflected, for example, in the nation’s culinary traditions.

“Japan’s culinary tradition for the true essence of Washoku (Japanese cuisine) is found in the quality of its ingredients. The subtleness of Japanese food and meticulous attention paid to its ingredients reflects our high sensitivity,” he explains.

“In food, clothes, or human relations, we Japanese are sensitive and considerate people. By virtues of this characteristic, the feeling a towel arouses when put in contact with one’s body is extremely important to us. We at Uchino also place the highest importance on raw materials in creating the finished product.

As a result, we have made it our policy to provide the most comfortable and softest towels in the market.”

Having built its reputation for catering to the sensitivities and demands of the Japanese market, Uchino started to bring its superior quality towels and bathroom linen to overseas customers in 1990. Today, Uchino products are available at more than 430 stores worldwide.

As the company looks to bring its luxury towels, bathrobes and wear to a growing base of overseas customers, Uchino will continue to work tirelessly to invest in technology to develop products that are more delicate to the touch and more comfortable to use— always in line with the Japanese Monozukuri philosophy devoted to creating unmatchable quality.

Mr. Uchino adds, “To everyone visiting Japan in the future, I encourage you to come and visit our ‘Uchino Touch’ shop in Roppongi, Tokyo (Roppongi Hills, West Walk, 4F), which truly embodies the Uchino spirit. The concept behind the name ‘Uchino Touch’ is to incite people to select products by the touch; not by the colour or the brand. This shop is the essence of Uchino and it displays all our patented materials: our light and soft towels; our comfortable and relaxing pyjamas and wear and all our carefully manufactured products.”
